US Citizens Visiting Cuba – What’s the Catch for Americans

I used to think it was illegal for Americans to visit Cuba but someone corrected me and said it was not illegal for US citizens to travel to Cuba, it is illegal for them to spend money in Cuba. I have not had this information officially verified, but it does make some sense.

Cubans will not turn you away. Many US citizens, especially the young ones realize that which is why I was able to meet so many Americans in Cuba, despite whole embargo going on. How Can an American Get to Cuba

Obviously, there are no directly flights from US mainland flying to Canada and US guard patrol the waters south of Florida so sailing to Cuba from the USA is also pretty much the impossibility. So how do Americans travel to Cuba? Simple – via Mexico, Bahamas or Canada.

If starting from the US, your best bet is to fly to Cancun, Mexico or Toronto, Canada and then purchase a plane ticket to Cuba there. There are also convenient flights from other places – Nassau or Mexico City worked for some Americans I have met.

It quite possibly could happen, but unless you tell, US officials may never find out. Cubans don’t stamp passports and Tourist Card is their visa. There will be no indication revealing US officials that you had previously visited Cuba. They may never know…
