Entry Requirements – Is Casa Particular Reservation Good Enough?
In order to enter Cuba, you are required to enter the adress of the place where you will be staying. This information must be on the tourist card in order for Cuban customs officials to grant you entry to Cuba. Contrary to popular belief, hotel reservation is not a mandatory entry requirement. Having reservation at a Casa Particular does meet Cuban entry requirements and will not cause any problems.
I’ve heard of some reports stating that you must have a hotel room reservation for at least 3 days in order to enter Cuba. This is untrue. Casas Particulares are officially recognized and government supported means of accommodation for foreigners and tourists to Cuba. Having a booking in a Casa Particular is perfectly fine and will cause no problems when entering Cuba from abroad.
The tourist card (which is official Cuban visa) has a section there where you must enter the address at which you will be staying in Cuba. If you are staying in a hotel, then the name of the hotel is sufficient. If you’re staying at a Casa Particular, write down the name of a casa and its address.
I have never heard of Cuban officials vigorously verifying your lodging arrangements so technically if you wrote down an address of any Casa Particular it should work just fine. As a matter of fact, I know several people who wrote random address of a random Casa Particular they found in a Lonely Planet guide. It got them in without problems.
To sum it up – no, you do NOT need a hotel reservation in order to enter Cuba. Cuban customs officers accept Casas Particulares as accommodation arrangements for tourists and it will cause you no problems whatsoever to put a Casa Particular down on a tourist card when entering Cuba.
